Young people with cancer face many issues unique to their life stage and often have different needs to those of adult consumers. Young people’s engagement and participation in the development of cancer initiatives is one way of ensuring health services have a youth perspective on the type of services young people need.
This presentation will focus on the experience of Kylie Lewis, who as a former patient and bereaved sibling has committed to lending her voice to the improvement of cancer services for young people. Kylie will focus on sharing her story and involvement as a consumer in both the government and non-government sector. She will discuss the growing movement of young people as active participants in cancer care and principles of purposeful youth participation. Finally, she will discuss the establishment of the Victorian & Tasmanian Youth Cancer Advisory Board and share a short video presentation of the Boards collective outcomes to date.
